Poon Hill Sunrise – A Magical Himalayan Experience

If there’s one moment during the Annapurna Base Camp Trek that feels almost surreal, it’s the sunrise from Poon Hill. You wake up before dawn, wrap yourself in layers to fight the mountain chill, and slowly hike uphill with a headlamp lighting the stone steps. The sky is still dark. The mountains are only shadows. But then something incredible happens.

As the first rays of sunlight touch the horizon, the entire Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges begin to glow. It starts with a faint golden line, then suddenly the snow-capped peaks burst into shades of orange, pink, and fiery gold. Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri — they stand tall like giants painted by nature itself.

At 3,210 meters, Poon Hill offers one of the widest panoramic mountain views in Nepal. Unlike many high-altitude viewpoints, it’s relatively accessible, which makes it a favorite among trekkers and photographers alike. You don’t need to be an extreme climber to witness something extraordinary.

Can I do the Annapurna Base Camp Trek solo?

Yes, solo trekking is possible in the Annapurna region, but hiring a licensed guide is strongly recommended for safety, navigation, and cultural insights. Since April 2023, Nepal has implemented regulations requiring trekkers in many regions to be accompanied by a licensed guide. Booking with Churen Himal Treks and Expedition Pvt. Ltd. ensures you meet all legal requirements and receive professional support throughout the journey.

Are there hot showers and WiFi available during the trek?

Yes, but availability depends on altitude. Lower villages offer hot showers (usually gas-heated), while higher areas may provide bucket showers at extra cost. WiFi is available in many tea houses, but the connection becomes weaker as you ascend. It’s best to enjoy the digital detox and immerse yourself in the mountains.

How safe is the Annapurna Base Camp Trek?

The Annapurna region is considered one of the safest trekking destinations in the world. The trails are well-marked, and there are plenty of tea houses along the route. However, mountain conditions can change quickly. Trekking with an experienced company like Churen Himal Treks and Expedition Pvt. Ltd. ensures that safety protocols, weather monitoring, and emergency preparedness are in place.

19

What is the total walking distance of the Annapurna Base Camp Trek?

The total trekking distance for the 15-day Annapurna Base Camp Trek via Poon Hill is approximately 110–130 kilometers (68–80 miles), depending on the exact route taken. Daily walking distances range from 8 to 15 kilometers. The gradual pace allows proper acclimatization and reduces fatigue.

20

Can I customize the Annapurna Base Camp Trek itinerary?

Yes, the itinerary can be customized according to your schedule, fitness level, and preferences. If you want a shorter version, luxury accommodation, or private trekking arrangements, Churen Himal Treks can tailor the package to meet your needs. Flexibility is one of the key advantages of booking with a local agency.

21

What makes the 15-day Annapurna Base Camp Trek better than shorter itineraries?

The 15-day itinerary provides proper acclimatization, cultural exploration, and a relaxed pace. Shorter itineraries may feel rushed and increase the risk of altitude-related issues. By including Poon Hill and a gradual ascent, this package ensures a safer, more enjoyable, and immersive Himalayan experience.

I went for an Everest Base Camp trek with CHT team in May 2018. Being a very organised person (I prefer everything to be planned in detail and booked in advance before I travel), I was a bit sceptic and nervous about the kind of arrangements that CHT would have done. But when I got there, I was pleased and surprised to see the amount of planning that CHT team had done and the professionalism that they showed at every step of our journey. We had two tour guides (Ranbir and Mulal) supported by two porters (Pasang and Dhane) all of them were very helpful, professional and were very accommodating of all our needs. I highly recommend Churen Himal Treks for your hiking needs.
